In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
